A Prayer for Israel’s Heros

Today Israel commemorates Yom Hazikaron, a day to remember Israel’s fallen soldiers and the innocent victims of the ongoing terrorist war against the Jewish state. The 24-hour mourning period began last night with a one-minute siren at 8 p.m. At that time, Israelis stopped what they were doing, wherever they were, and stood at attention. We ask that you join us today, on this most solemn day, to pray for the safety and protection of Israel’s soldiers, for comfort for families who have lost loved ones, and for a true and lasting peace in Israel.

I love hearing people of my parents’ generation recall the establishment of the state of Israel on May 14, 1948. And when I read passages such as Amos 9:14-15 – “‘I will bring my people Israel back from exile. They will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them. They will plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will make gardens and eat their fruit. I will plant Israel in their own land, never again to be uprooted from the land I have given them‘” – I can’t help but think of the thriving land of Israel I am blessed to call home today.

We celebrate that land on Yom Ha’atzmautIsrael Independence…

Israel Remembers Its Fallen Soldiers

The official ceremony marking Yom Hazikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day for the IDF’s Fallen Soldiers, in which Israel remembers and honors its fallen soldiers, began Sunday evening at the Western Wall. In a moving speech President Shimon Peres addressed large crowd that gathered saying, ”We will never forget those who allowed Israel to be great; those who during the last 65 years of the State’s existence protected it with their bodies, blood and spirit – securing its borders and citizens.”

Speaking to the bereaved families Peres said, “We are here thanks to Israel’s fighters who joined the struggle for our existence, thanks to those who survived the wars and thanks to those who fell. We do not forget, even for a second, that we are here thanks to the fallen.

“Today, while the accumulated threats against the State of Israel are greater than in the past, both the IDF and our security services are…
