Children from the Bedouin village of Abu Kurinat (in south Israel) were all smiles as they lined up at the starting line for a 10-mile bike trip. 4Zion had distributed many of their bikes – 800 total in that region – together with the Israel Bicycle Association (IBA) as part of a special program to teach these kids about the importance of sports and to help improve their quality of life.
Many of these children walk hours to and from school every day because their families don’t have cars – so these bicycles change their life. IBA formed groups of these schoolchildren who go riding together twice a week with a trained guide who also offers the students skills for dealing with the life challenges they face.
The socioeconomic situation in the Bedouin settlements is not good, so money in the school budgets for sports and physical education is scarce. This unique program educates the children about sports, promotes health and exercise, and helps the kids learn needed life skills.
